How to Mount a Clothesline on a Concrete Wall

Mounting a clothesline on a concrete wall is straightforward if you use the right anchors. You need a masonry drill bit, concrete anchors, and a screwdriver. The whole process takes about 15 minutes.

GorillaLine Max includes concrete anchors — everything you need is in the box. Get it here →

What You Need

  • Masonry/concrete drill bit (usually 3/16" or 1/4")
  • Hammer drill (preferred) or regular drill with a masonry bit
  • Concrete anchors (GorillaLine includes these)
  • Screwdriver or drill
  • Level
  • Pencil for marking

Step-by-Step: Mounting on Concrete

Step 1: Mark Your Mounting Points

Hold the mounting brackets against the wall at your desired height (typically 6–7 feet high). Use a level to make sure both brackets are at the same height. Mark the screw hole positions with a pencil.

Step 2: Drill Pilot Holes

Install your masonry bit into the drill. If you have a hammer drill, use the hammer mode. Drill into the marks at slow-to-medium speed with firm pressure. Drill to the depth specified on your anchor package (usually about 1.5 inches deep).

Tip: If you hit a hard spot or the bit spins without cutting, you've hit aggregate (rock) in the concrete — try a spot about half an inch away.

Step 3: Insert Concrete Anchors

Tap the concrete anchors into the drilled holes with a hammer until they're flush with the wall surface.

Step 4: Mount the Brackets

Hold the mounting bracket against the wall, align the screw holes with the anchors, and drive in the screws. Tighten firmly but don't over-torque.

Step 5: Attach and Extend the Line

Attach the clothesline housing to one bracket and the anchor point to the other. Extend the line and you're done.

Tips for Success

  • Hammer drill is strongly preferred for concrete — a regular drill will work but takes much longer and risks overheating the bit
  • Don't drill near electrical conduits or pipes — if in doubt, use a stud finder with live wire detection
  • Outdoor concrete can be harder than indoor — be patient with the drilling
  • Use the right anchor for your concrete type — GorillaLine's included anchors work on standard poured concrete and concrete block

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you mount a clothesline on concrete without drilling?

Not reliably. Adhesive anchors may work for light loads but will fail under a full load of wet laundry. Drilling is the right approach for anything that needs to hold 10+ lbs.

What size drill bit for concrete anchors?

Match the drill bit to your anchor size. GorillaLine's included anchors use a 3/16" masonry bit, which is included in most standard drill bit sets.
